About Us

To the Ladies

Founded in 1927, the Natchez Garden Club was the first preservation organization in the state of Mississippi. For almost a century our members have remained dedicated to our original mission of community improvement and historic preservation. Our stated purpose is to preserve, educate and improve through service to our club and our community. We honor the history, traditions and accomplishments of the people who came before, while embracing the future with open hearts and minds.

The Natchez Garden Club’s community service projects include maintaining historical gardens at both Magnolia Hall and House on Ellicott’s Hill. These gardens are open to the public free of charge. In addition we participate in community improvement campaigns in cooperation with the City of Natchez and other organizations such as the Natchez City Cemetery and local parks.

To promote our city, our members serve on city boards and commissions, host special events for visitors to our city, and work closely with the Natchez Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, Chamber of Commerce, Historic Natchez Foundation, and Natchez Downtown Development Association to provide community events seasonally.

The Natchez Garden Club has contributed to the development of the Natchez Trails Project in conjunction with the Natchez Community Alliance. The Alliance has developed a historic walking and biking tour in downtown Natchez, Mississippi.

We continue to develop educational history tours that enhance our historic properties, we use the most relevant resources to ensure we are incorporating new information as it becomes available . Our club also provides space for artists to create and display appropriate artwork of the period at one of our houses during Fall and Spring Pilgrimages.

Working closely with our sister organization the non-profit Preservation Society of Ellicott Hill, the club works to restore, maintain and preserve the houses and grounds of Magnolia Hall, James Andrews House/Lawyer’s Lodge and The House on Ellicott Hill including our meeting site, Ellicott Hall. In addition we maintain a swimming pool for recreation during the summer months. The pool is available to our full time members and we offer summer pool memberships to the community.

We  work constantly to improve our skills of gardening and sound environmental practices. The grounds of all three club-owned houses show evidence of our commitment to sound horticultural practices by the planting of historically and regionally appropriate plans in our urban environment. Our gardens are available to our Young Gardeners, so that we are able to share with them the importance of conservation of trees, wildflowers, birds, water and the land itself. We are active members of the The Garden Clubs of Mississippi and the National Garden Clubs, Inc.

We dedicate ourselves to the education of the garden club members of the future, as well as to out of town visitors and area community.
